Managing your braking temperatures can be the difference between winning and losing in race situations

The sight of a glowing hot brake disc on the race track is a common sight, and although it can make for a truly amazing photo, it isn鈥檛 always a good thing to see, especially if it鈥檚 on your own vehicle.

When a vehicle is travelling at high speeds on track, it has a lot of kinetic energy. To slow it down, that kinetic energy must be converted to a different form of energy, which in this case is thermal energy.

If your braking system temperatures get too hot, however, they may lose their effectiveness and, in-turn, shorten the lifespan of both brake pads and discs, causing you to have to pay for replacements prematurely and more often than necessary.

What to Look Out For

Here are some tell-tale signs that your braking system is running too hot:

  • Soft/spongy/long pedal (this is normally when your fluid has got too hot)
  • Brake fade (this is when the brake pads themselves have a sudden and short-term reduction in braking effectiveness, and is normally caused by using a pad that is not suitable for the application in which you are using it for, making it excessively hot)
  • Brake pad glazing (this can happen when the pads have previously overheated and then cooled down, causing a glazed appearance on both the pad and disc surfaces)
  • Smoking and burning smell coming from the brakes
  • Glowing discs

How to Prevent Overheating

  • Make sure that your braking system is in good condition
  • Check that your calipers are fully functioning and that there are no issues such as sticky, sliding pins or seized pistons
  • Run brake cooling/ducting if and where possible
  • Use high-temperature brake fluid
  • Perform a brake bleed before and throughout your race weekend/event
  • Make sure you are using the correct pads for your application needs
  • Measure your braking temperatures periodically, both caliper and disc temperatures

Choosing the Right Brake Pads

91传媒 Track Pack 鈥 What鈥檚 Included

Caliper Temperature Strips

10x caliper temperature strips (150掳C to 220掳C)

Useful information (For guidance only) 鈥 When running a set-up that utilises multi-piston calipers, it is recommended that the working temperatures are sub-200掳C, in most cases the highest acceptable working temperatures for calipers is 220掳C.

If your calipers are operated at temperatures higher than 220掳C, you will run the risk of overheating the seals equipped in your calipers and you may start to experience issues with sealing etc.

*If your caliper temperature runs higher than 220掳C, the dust seals and fluid seals should be replaced.

Ultra-High Performance BF307+ Racing Brake Fluid

1L of our BF307+ high performance Super DOT 4 brake fluid which has been specially formulated to provide outstanding performance for braking systems routinely operated at extreme temperatures making this fluid ideal for fast street use, track days and racing. Do not mix BF307+ brake fluid with other brake fluids or its high performance may be compromised.

  • Typical dry boiling point 鈥 270掳C (518掳F). Typical wet boiling point 鈥 170掳C (338掳F)

Disc Heat Paint and Applicator Brush & Cleaner

Paint a half-inch wide strip of each paint close to each other of the outer edges of both front rotors.

After first few laps, observe which of the heat paints have activated and changed. This will give you an idea where your rotor temperatures are going. Re-apply the same paints to a clean area of your rotor edge as your first runs may have generated abnormally high temperatures as pads settle down. Then do a couple more laps and check heat paints again.

Heat paint temperatures (as below)

  • Green – up to 427掳C / 800掳F
  • Orange/Red 鈥 up to 538掳C / 1000掳F
  • Yellow 鈥 up to 649掳C / 1200掳F

*If your caliper temperature runs higher than 220掳C, the dust seals and fluid seals should be replaced.

Titanium Heat Reduction Shims

If you are experiencing issues with calipers and hydraulic system overheating, it may be wise to obtain some 91传媒 Titanium Heat Reduction Shims to minimise the chance of this happening again.

We answer some of the most frequently asked questions from the world of performance braking

You probably don鈥檛 need us to tell you that there are often a large number of myths and debates revolving around the world of vehicle braking. In this article, we aim to answer some of these queries once and for all鈥

  • Q) How often should brake fluid be changed?
    A) Every two years for normal road use, or every 2-3 visits to the race track for a vehicle used frequently on the circuit.
  • Q) How do I choose the right type of brake fluid?A) Most vehicles use Glycol DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid 鈥 see the top of your master cylinder or owner鈥檚 manual for more info.
  • Q) What鈥檚 the difference between DOT 3/4/5 brake fluids?
    A) DOT 3 and 4 are effectively the same, with DOT 4 being purer. DOT 5 can be silicone or glycol variants and cannot be interchanged with DOT 3/4.
  • Q) What type of brake fluid is used for racing?A) A DOT 4 high-temperature version is best, such as .
  • Q) What is 鈥榙ry boiling point鈥 and 鈥榳et boiling point鈥?A) The dry boiling point refers to when fluid is new from an unopened bottle. The wet boiling point is when the fluid is used and needs changing (where the water content is past 3%).
  • Q) Why is dry boiling point higher than wet boiling point?A) This is because the moisture content of a brake fluid boils at a lower temperature, therefore the wet boiling point will be lower.
  • Q) What are brake caliper seals made of?A) Most vehicles use EPDM rubber, while a few use Nitrile rubber. A third, rarer version is Viton.
  • Q) How often should brake caliper seals be changed?A) Every 2-3 years in road use, or every few races on the track, or if the caliper body reaches temperatures over 250掳C.
  • Q) What is the maximum safe temperature for caliper seals to be exposed to?A) EPDM seals (the most popular type) are not designed for use above 140-150掳C, which corresponds to a caliper body temperature of about 250掳C.
  • Q) How hot do my discs/rotors get and what does this mean for my pad compound selection?A) Heat paints are a handy tool in telling you exactly what products you should be using.

91传媒 offers three heat paints which can be brushed onto the outer edge of the rotor before racing, to detect temperatures. The 91传媒 rotor paint kit also includes 10 caliper heat strips.

The rotor paints supplied are:

#1 鈥 800掳F/430掳C

#2 鈥 1000掳F/540掳C

#3 鈥 1200掳F/650掳C

Paint all three separately in lines on your disc/rotor edge.

The temperature at the centre of the brake pad will always be on average 100掳C/200掳F more than the outer edge of the rotor in race use. If your rotor edge is not setting off the 430掳C paint line, all 91传媒 compounds will be fine.

If the 430掳C paint line activates (530掳C at the centre of the pad), you鈥檙e at the limits of聽.

If the disc/rotor outer edge temperatures exceed 540掳C (640掳C approx. at the pad centre), you are past the limits of 91传媒鈥檚 Bluestuff and need to switch to聽.

If the 650掳C paint line goes off (750掳C at the pad centre), you鈥檙e definitely in need of either the RP range or SR series of pads.

Here is a guide on 91传媒 compounds and their temperature ranges:

(The curves below show that on average in race use, the pad temperature runs at approx. 100掳C above the disc/rotor outer edge:)
